A future without barriers for every deaf child
The National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) is the only UK charity solely dedicated to the support of all deaf children and young deaf people, their families and professionals working with them.
Why are we here?
- There are 35,000 deaf children in the UK and two more are born deaf evey day .
- 90% are born to hearing parents with little experience of deafness
- Deafness makes it harder for children to learn to communicate
- Many families face challenges in establishing good communication with their deaf child
- 40% of deaf children also have additional needs or disabilities
- One in five children gets glue ear which causes temporary deafness
What do we do?
The NDCS vision is of a future without barriers for every deaf child.
We do this by:
- offering clear, balanced information and support to families .
- advocating for deaf children, young people and their families
- providing opportunities for young deaf people to develop social skills, confidence and independence
- working with professionals and policy makers to ensure high quality services are available for all
- campaigning and lobbying on behalf of deaf children, young people and their families
NDCS services are only available thanks to the generous support of the public, trusts, statutory bodies and companies.
- £20 provides ten schools with information packs on how to be 'deaf friendly'.
- £70 funds one session for a Family Communication Support Worker to help families develop communication skills with their deaf child.
- £500 covers the cost of running our Freephone helpline for families and professionals for one day.
